I had to do a hard reset to get my data back and i did NOT uninstall with data off. I turned data off, turned it back on again, and 4 hours later I still DID NOT have data.

A bit confused… is this for non-USA, or data roaming or..? Because (I am Tmo-USA) my Browser has no trouble going on line with apnoid set to stop wireless internet. Mind you, if it shuts down data-roaming while I’m in Europe, et., great. I don’t care about non-roaming shut down. But, would like clarification. Thanks

It is supposed to shut off data, even in the US. Right now I am having the same issue as Mark, it won’t turn data back on, even though it says enabled.

David, it should shut off data also in USA. If your browser was already connected before you turned data off with APNdroid, it might still keep the old connection. Or, if you don’t have version 1.2.1 it is possible that is won’t work for you. In version 1.2.1 I added support for networks, that ignore APN names and now APNdroid is changing also APN type by adding the same suffix to it. Can you please verify it’s there and you can still connect? Feel free to contact me at martin at adamek dot gmail dot com

Ok, for the record, I installed the new 1.2.1, and am having no problems.

Just a thought. If you are not getting your data back, try going into Gmail and do a refresh. I’ve noticed a bit of a lag getting my data back, but this Gmail refresh seems to force it on?

@Martin, yes running 1.2.1, that is the version that stopped working. Previous versions worked fine. No .android, for example, T-Mobile US and the APN is epc.tmobile.com. When i have it off (off in the notification bar), all of the APNs do have .android at the end. When I enable, on is in the notification bar and the .androids are gone.

@David, opened Gmail and refreshed, still no data. Also tried going into Data sync and syncing with no luck.

I also tried cycling the power and removing the battery.

I’m not alone, there are a couple other people posting the same issue…yet there are folks with no problems…very odd…

Anonymous, well if I were in your shoes, and APNdroid was an essential for me (and it is), I would back up my downloaded programs to my SD card (and be able to reinstall using Astro or something), uninstall them, and see if I’ve got a conflicting app. 1.2.1 is supposed to deny mobile internet to those programs which don’t use ANPs, maybe the issue is there. Your wifi work?

After three, yes three, times removing the battery and using gmail to try and refresh…data came back.

David, you’re in US, right? If you have a look at Access Point you are using, is there any name under ‘APN type’ (it’s the last item in the list)? For some networks it is empty and for some not. What’s yours? And also Anonymous, can you have a look at that too?

Yes, I’m in the states. Under APN Tmo US > APN Type, I have “not set”. Of course, if I use your program to “disconnect” APN Type becomes apndroid.

I have the same exact issue as Anonymous. Very frustrating! No “.apndroid” left in apns but still no connection. Have shut on and off several times and unistalled and reinstalled app with no luck. I will try taking battery out and see what happens. Have tried to refresh gmail with no luck as well.

Okay, six power cycles and battery removal each time later still no access. What should I try now?

Now the only way I can think of is to rename your currently used APN to something like currentname_old and try to add New APN (in ‘Settings – Wireless controlls – Mobile networks – Access Point Names’ with exactly same values as the old APN has.
Also I am going to publish new version 1.2.2 (in few minutes) that will try to solve this problem, if that will not help I will revert to old version before 1.2.

OK, there’s a new version 1.2.2 in the Market. Please give it a try and let me know if things a getting better.

Mine works, but stupid question: when I go into the APN TMobile US, there is a password — what the heck is that?

@David, AFAIK it could be used by some networks to protect access, but I never saw such network (not that I saw many of them:-)

Got on via wifi and downloaded 1.2.2. Still no connection. Not sure what to try next.

No I don’t think I did. Do you mean refresh my gmail account from a computer while my phone is off? Please give me explicit directions if you don’t mind. Thanks!

@Rob, just to make sure – did you use also DroidSans Tweak Tools Lite to manage settings? Also did you try to make new APN like I suggested few comments earlier?

I didn’t use DroidSans before but I downloaded now and it won’t let me tweak any APNs – it says this feature is only for non-US users. I didn’t make a new APN like you talked about because mine also has a password on it that I can’t read. This is all new to me but I literally have 22 APNs on my phone. Not sure if that is normal or not.

After powering on, go into Gmail on the phone. Push the menu button and select “refresh”. Anonymous (above) reports that worked for him, but he had to try a few times.

Something else you might try. Go into your APNs. Choose the T-mobile US and rename it T-mobile USX (if need be you can always go back and change it). Push menu and select new APN. Under name type T-Mobile US Then, under APN type epc.tmobile.com Do nothing more. Save, back out of the menu and try to connect.

Rob… by the way, when I say “type” I do not mean the label APN TYPE. You will type epc.tmobile.com under the second heading labeled APN. Just to be clear. You will only add information to the first two headings.

I’m in the UK and just downloaded this today and it works great. What I wanted to know is when I go to the US will it still have the same effect, and can I still get my mail using wifi? I don’t want any roaming data charges. I know it’s a bit of a lame question but I’m new to this and would like to know.

@Andy, yes, it will prevent data access also in US and it has nothing to do with WiFi. WiFi is completely independent.

If Rob did it as directed, he would have only entered info for the first two headings. I have a four didgit “password” on my APN and my sim lock is four digits as well, suspect they are one and the same.

Hasn’t worked right for me since the update, (no data even after i turn it off). Reading above I got it to work after deleting the T-Mobile US apn and creating a new one, although that doesn’t even have an instant effect, took a couple tries and had to reboot the phone after doing so for data to finally work again… worked great b4 that, now I can’t use it.

@Anonymous – by reboot you mean turn off/on (not hard reset), right? Does this happen every time you use APNdroid or only occasionally?

Yea, just turn off and on, and yes every time. I have stopped using it since the update after I finally got data working. I did try it a couple times and had the same problem each time, couldn’t get data to work at all after disabling it. Had to delete the US apn and make a new one and turn the phone off and on and even then it wasn’t always an instant fix, took a couple tries usually.

I am definately thinking of getting this program, since I just want to use wifi to access the net with my mobile, but having said that, in the rare emergency situation when I need internet without wifi, I wouldnt like to have it disabled permanently,

therefore, are the problems described by the users in the above posts solved? Are there just a few people having a problem, not necessarily with the app, but maybe because of a conflict with another app, or in regards to the APN settings they had before installing the app?

just want some clarifications before going for it. This is exactly what I was looking for though, well done on creating such an elegant solution.

@raukodur as far as I know, 3 people reported mentioned problems. Other than that, there are 1230 active installs right now, and 99% of positive feedback on market, so I think it works fine. Anyway, I am still thinking how to solve problem mentioned by Anonymous.

@paja Na telefone (G1) spusti aplikaciu Market. 3. polozka v zozname akcii je Search (da sa na nu dostat aj cez Menu->Search). Do vyhladavacieho okna napis ‘apn’ a pockaj kym sa zobrazia vysledky (mali by byt asi 2). Zvol APNdroid a potom Install. Chvilku pockaj a vlavo hore by sa ti mala objvit notifikacia o uspesnom nainstalovani. Najdi si APNdroid medzi aplikaciami a mozes zacat pouzivat.

So just to understand if this will solve my concern. I am receiving my G1 sometime this week, and I live in Canada. I do not (and don’t want) a data plan, and thus I want the phone to NEVER use anything except WiFi. I already plan to call Rogers (my provider) to block all data, but that is only on Rogers network right? So for instance, if I visit USA, will it automatically roam and start using data if I don’t have this?

Basically I will be blocking my data via my provider in Canada, and then use APNdroid to ensure it is blocked while travelling in the US. Does this sound like it will work as I intend?

@Kevin Yes, it will work as you intend. G1 itself has option in settings to disallow connectivity while roaming, but for some reason, phone was connecting anyways. With APNdroid all data access (excluding WiFi) is disabled. For you, the same thing would be also to completely remove all APNs from your phone.

@Martin Adamek, thank you very much for that confirmation. Also one more quick general question if you don’t mind. Does this application in anyway affect GPS? And does GPS require a data plan, or is it completely free?

@Kevin GPS is independent technology. Of course if you want to use it with Google Maps, you will need internet access to download maps.

I installed and tested apndroid before going out of the country and everything seemed to work – it disabled data connectivity, and after reenabling connectivity using apndroid, all was OK. I ran apndroid again on the way to the airport for a flight out of the country, and when I came back and ran it, I was unable to establish any data connection. I tried the suggestions in this blog entry and nothing worked. I eventually had to factory-reset my G1 and call T-Mobile support to have them “delete and restore my data connectivity.” When I was out of the country I used the phone to check voice mail (roaming) twice, but that’s it.

Chris, Just to be sure, let me ask you this. When you realized you could not reestablish data connection, did you then do a reset? THEN, when that did not work, did you call TMO? OR, did the TMO rep have you do the reset? AND… did the rep say what was wrong with your data connection?

Just want to establish if the phone reset was done and didn’t help, but the data work TMO rep did, solved the problem.

I am also a user in Canada, and had a shocking experience on my G1. Before I was able to unlock the G1, I kept the T-Mobile SIM in the phone and just used WIFI. I disabled data roaming, but received a $140 USD data roaming charge.

I called T-Mobile to dispute and found if you have Sync on, regardless of the data settings it will still go out through the data network.

Does this app prevent this from happening?

@Don Yes, APNdroid should help you in this situation. No service in phone will be able to get working data connection.

Will this app also turn off my phones ability to send and receive phone calls? I am going to Europe and am hoping to find an app that turns off ALL access to Edge, GPRS, 3g, Analog, whatever possible connection BUT WIFI. I only want to have Wifi functioning. Upon needing to use my phone for a call or when I return home I want it to be easy to toggle back to my original settings where I get data, voice, SMS, and everything on GPRS, Edge, 3g, etc….

Will that app do that for me?

@Lax71vcu It will disable all data connections. Your WiFi, voice and SMS will remain untouched. Once you return home, you’ll just invoke it again and you’ll be back with data connections.

I want a wifi only device. I don’t even want to get voice or text. JUST wifi. Is this possible? Any advice? Thanks for your help

I find i have to reset when i turn data on. It is rather annoying. It is like it makes no attempt after apn have been changed back to search for a data connection.

clicking setting seems to help actually. Try browsing to you apn info, before i got there it started working. With out this it wont connect for me.(small trade off) Great app by the way.

@Martin, Do you think that it is possible to include the option to select the APN’s that you want to disable? For example by installing the app there could be an option to select all APN’s or select APN’s that you always want to keep.
Only by installing / first run this option should appear. This way you can keep the toggle mode.
The idea is to not disable the mms APN but the data/internet APN.

Just a tought..

Love it, the new interface makes it simple and quick.

However, I second Dorothea’s request. I don’t have a data plan and use apndroid to activate data only when I need it, but the MMS APN should never be disabled.

So, a “never disable this apn”, or, alternatively, an option to not disable the APNs that have mms as apn type, would be great.

Did I mention how useful this app is ?

@Bublebree It’s not available for download from computer browser. It’s only available via Market application on your phone.

here you have a not so nice “feature” of G1, dataroaming and your APNdroid application.

Look at this as a use-case; hopefully you know what i’m talking about.

Let’s say the user installs your app on the g1, and switches data communication off.
Then he goes abroad, and he is happy for not paying horrendous bills for the roaming.
Now, still abroad, someone (eg. a kid) plays with the phone: it draws so nice red lines between the dots, doesn’t it?
The phone gets locked. The user has to enter your email and password. BUT!
The user is abroad and roaming is switched off. Impossible to log in.
The user goes back to his home country. BUT!
The network is still disabled by your application. It is impossible to log in.

How do you solve this?

PS: Oh yeah, I can hard-reset the phone. Anything else?

If it is not possible to run any applications or use wifi while phone is blocked, then yes – hard reset is the thing.
